Rainbow River – August 29, 2015

I had a nice paddle on the Rainbow River yesterday near Dunnellon, FL.  There were about 20 people signed up, but due to dire weather reports (which didn’t materialize until our drive home) only 10 showed up.   And for once, I was NOT leading the trip.  So I got to play, take lots of pics, paddle fast or slow, chat or float silently, as I wished.

Since there were a bunch of folks signed up who needed to rent we met up at Rainbow River Canoe and Kayak.  After registration, payment, a safety and river intro talk they then shuttled all of us and our kayaks up to K.P. Hole.  But it also meant we didn’t get on the water until around 11 am.   We paddled 1.6 miles upstream to the head spring in Rainbow Springs State park, then floated back down to RRC&K’s place on the Withlacoochee RIver.  About a 9-mile trip, 1.6 miles upstream, and I paddled all the way, testing the ribs.  I’m a little sore today, but I did fine on the river, so I’m on the mend.  YAY!

Silver River – August 26, 2015

Slow and gentle paddle on the Silver River at Silver Springs, FL yesterday.  I’m recovering from bruised ribs, my friend from a pulled muscle in her leg, so we needed slow and gentle, but we also needed to get out!

We put in at the Silver Springs State Park launch and took out at Ray Wayside County Park launch.  There is no shuttle service, you have to do your own.

Didn’t see any monkeys this trip, but lots of gators and turtles.  And since there has been little rain the last few days (until last night!) to stir up the water, it was very clear and quiet.

Water was so clear today. This is either a Florida Gar or a Spotted Gar about 2 foot long and about 2 feet under water. Really need to get a polarizing filter for my pics through water!

Rainbow River – August 12, 2015

Another nice day on the Rainbow River this time with the Florida Trail Association.  In spite of the stormy looking skies everything turned out well.  We only got one 5 minute shower just before we launched.

View down the river under lowering clouds. But except for a 5 minute shower as we launched, we had no rain.
