Suwannee River – July 9, 2015

Nice paddle today on the Suwannee to celebrate the Yak Pak birthday.  We paddled from Fanning Springs SP to Manatee Springs SP.

The first 7 miles were great with 2 beach stops to cool off.  The last 2-3 miles were strenuous due to a headwind from a thunderstorm whipping up white caps on the river. The thunderstorm passed us by, but we really got a work out!

Not too much in the way of wildlife except a few Little Blue Herons, Ibis, Great Egrets, and Cattle Egrets.  And sturgeon jumping, of course.  You can see sturgeons jump anywhere on the Suwanne, but this streach between Fanning and Manatee springs generally has the most for some reason.

After the paddle we celebrated with BBQ from the Manatee Springs SP concession and deserts we brought from home. Great birthday party!  Not too many pics today – I was playing with learning how to use the video function on my little point-and-shoot.

Chassahowitzka River – July 05, 2015

Wonderful day paddling with friends at Chassahowitzka (Chaz-WITS-ka) near Homosassa, FL.  A very hot day so we limited ourselves to visiting the swimming springs – “Seven Sisters” and “The Crack”.

We put in at Chassahowitzka Campground (where you can also rent canoes and kayaks) then paddled upstream to Seven Sisters. When it started getting crowded there we paddled downstream to Baird Creek and paddled up to “The Crack”.  When it started getting really crowded there we paddled back to the Campground boat ramp and went out to a late lunch before heading home.

Melrose Bay – July 1, 2015

A different kind of paddle this week. We invited Tommy Thompson from Florida Kayak School to come over from Tallahassee and do a class for the 5-Star Yak Pak on Melrose Bay. As always, we had a good time and we learned something, too!

We worked on paddling techniques drawn from ACA Level 2 and 3 to make us better paddlers and thus have more fun on the water.  We worked worked on rescues and re-entries, low and high braces, maneuvering, especially at docks and developing a more efficient forward stroke.  This later was particularly important for me.  Since I’m always stopping to take pictures I need to be better able to catch up with the group.
