Great day paddling (aren’t they all?) on the Rainbow River near Dunnellon, FL. We put in at K.P. Hole County Park, paddled up to the head spring at Rainbow Springs state Park, then floated back down to the CR 484 take-out. A little over 7 miles all together.
Seven of us hit the river in the cold, but the sun came out and by the time we were on the water after setting up our shuttling we were ditching our jackets. We saw a couple of little gators, some turtles, a tree of Cormorants building nests (a very noisy business), Wood Ducks, Anhinga, several pair of Red Shouldered Hawks, Ibis, Common Gallinules, American Coots, Pileated Woodpeckers, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, immature Little Blue Herons, a Tri-colored Heron, even a horse getting ready to go for a swim.
And a nice lunch at Swampy’s afterward with some good people.
